Arch Enemy was formed in 1995 by Michael Amott and Johan Liiva. Their debut album, Black Earth, was recorded in nine days at Studio Fredman and released in 1996 on Wrong Again Records. After switching to Century Media, the band released Stigmata in 1998, gaining wider popularity. Bassist Sharlee D'Angelo and drummer Daniel Erlandsson joined for the 1999 album Burning Bridges, followed by the live album Burning Japan Live 1999.

In November 2000, vocalist Johan Liiva was fired via letter and replaced by German death metal vocalist Angela Gossow, who debuted on the 2001 album Wages of Sin. Gossow remained the frontwoman through several albums, including Anthems of Rebellion (2003), Doomsday Machine (2005), and Rise of the Tyrant (2007). In March 2014, Gossow left the band to become its manager, and was replaced by Canadian vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, formerly of the Agonist. Alissa White-Gluz remains the band's vocalist as of the last known canon.

Supergroup Origins in Halmstad

Arch Enemy emerged in 1995 from the small Swedish city of Halmstad, born from the shared history of guitarist Michael Amott and vocalist Johan Liiva, both veterans of the death metal outfit Carnage. From the outset, the project carried the weight of a supergroup: its roster drew musicians from Carcass, Armageddon, Carnage, Mercyful Fate, Spiritual Beggars, The Agonist, Nevermore, Eucharist, and Once Human. The debut album, Black Earth, was recorded in just nine days at Studio Fredman and issued in 1996 through the now-defunct Wrong Again Records label. After that initial release, the band secured a contract with Century Media, which would become their long-term home. The 1998 album Stigmata marked their first worldwide release and helped them build a broader audience across Europe and America. Bassist Martin Bengtsson and drummer Peter Wildoer joined around this period, cementing the early lineup that would define the band's melodic death metal identity.

A Revolving Door at the Vocal Throne

She departed in March 2014 and transitioned into the role of the group's manager. Her seat was then filled by Canadian vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, who carried the torch until the end of 2025. On 19 February 2026, American singer Lauren Hart was announced as the band's newest frontwoman. The 2003 album Anthems of Rebellion introduced notable innovations, including a second voice singing in harmony on tracks like "End of the Line" and "Dehumanization." Doomsday Machine followed in 2005, and Rise of the Tyrant in 2007 became the band's highest-charting effort, debuting at number 84 on the Billboard 200. The 2009 compilation The Root of All Evil re-recorded twelve songs from the pre-Gossow era. Khaos Legions arrived in May 2011, with its first single "Yesterday is Dead and Gone" released in March of that year.

A Truly International Touring Machine

Arch Enemy have built a reputation as relentless global travelers, with Japan featuring prominently throughout their touring history. They performed at the "Japan's Beast Feast 2002" concert alongside Slayer and Motörhead, and returned to Japan multiple times, including a 2004 tour and a 2008 live show in Tokyo filmed for the DVD Tyrants of the Rising Sun. Their festival footprint spans continents: Wacken Open Air in Germany in 2006, Bloodstock Open Air in 2007 between Sabbat and In Flames, and the Dubai Desert Rock Festival in 2009 alongside Opeth, Chimaira, and Motörhead. In 2009 they also made their first visit to New Zealand and headlined at Seoul's Melon AX Hall in South Korea. They co-headlined the "Defenders of the Faith" tour with Opeth in 2008 and joined the Black Crusade tour with Machine Head, Trivium, DragonForce, and Shadows Fall. The band also toured South America and Europe in the first half of 2009, cementing their status as a truly international act.
