Bullet was formed in autumn 2001 in Växjö, Sweden, by guitarist Hampus Klang and vocalist Dag "Hell" Hofer. Bassist Lenny Blade, second guitarist Erik Almström, and drummer Gustav Hjortsjö soon joined. The band recorded and released its first demo, Heavy Metal Highway, in summer 2002, which helped establish them on the Swedish underground metal scene. From 2003 to 2005, they performed extensively across Sweden and parts of Scandinavia, building a reputation as a high-energy live band.

Their debut studio album, Heading for the Top, was released on April 28, 2006, through Black Lodge Records.
