Fatal Smile is a Swedish hard rock band that got its start in Katrineholm in 1995, founded by guitarist and main songwriter Mr Y. Around 1996, Mr Y teamed up with bassist Marcus Johansson, and the pair later relocated to Stockholm to pursue music full-time. The band cites influences including Whitesnake, Dio, Accept, Metallica, W.A.S.P, and Dokken.
In 1999, the group recorded a two-song demo titled "Hip M.F/Sad & Gone." The first stable lineup took shape with Mr Y on guitar, Markus Johansson on bass, Robin Lagerquist (formerly of Six Pack Solution) on drums, and vocalist H.B. Anderson, who joined in 2000 after stints in Scudiero and Token.
Work on the debut album began in the summer of 2001, with the first song written together being "Beyond Reality." Producer Jonas Östman, who had previously worked with Yngwie Malmsteen, handled the sessions. Recording and mixing took six weeks, and the album—also called *Beyond Reality*—came out in early 2002 on GMR Music. It included the bonus track "Hip M.F.," which became a regular spin at Stockholm rock clubs and a staple of the band’s live sets. A music video for "Bad Kharma" was shot at Göta Källare under director Poppe Linge; it got frequent airplay on Swedish channel ZTV but was deemed too risqué for MTV. In the summer of 2003, the band toured the US briefly, playing shows including the Metal Meltdown Fest in New Jersey.
The 2006 album *Neo Natural Freaks* brought growing popularity both in Sweden and abroad. The band toured heavily during this period, opening for acts like W.A.S.P and Winger. Drummer Tomas Lindgren replaced Robin Lagerquist around this time. The 2005 single "Learn, Love, Hate" reached the top three on Swedish radio and was played often, and the subsequent tour took the band to Japan, with shows in Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka.
As the band worked on a heavier follow-up, Mr Y recruited a new vocalist, Blade, in 2007. Alx joined on bass and ZTeff on drums, forming a completely new lineup that gave the music a rawer edge. The resulting album, *World Domination*, was released in 2008 and mixed by Michael Wagener, known for his work with Ozzy Osbourne and Skid Row. The band described it as a basic rock and roll record.
