Dark Tranquillity, formed in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 1989, are a foundational band of the melodic death metal scene, alongside peers like At the Gates and In Flames. The group began as Septic Broiler, with vocalist Mikael Stanne, guitarist Niklas Sundin, drummer Anders Jivarp, and bassist Martin Henriksson. After a 1990 demo called *Enfeebled Earth*, they renamed themselves Dark Tranquillity.
Their debut album, *Skydancer*, arrived in August 1993. Soon after, vocalist Anders Fridén left to join In Flames, prompting Stanne to switch from guitar to lead vocals, with Fredrik Johansson brought in on second guitar. A 1995 cover of Metallica’s “My Friend of Misery” appeared on a tribute album. The critically acclaimed second album *The Gallery* was released in 1995, followed by the EP *Of Chaos and Eternal Night* in the same month or shortly after. The EP *Enter Suicidal Angels* came in 1996, followed by the 1997 album *The Mind’s I*, which continued *The Gallery*’s sound.
In early 1999, Johansson departed to focus on family and stable work. Bassist Henriksson moved to second guitar, Michael Niklasson joined on bass, and Martin Brändström was added for electronics. The resulting album *Projector* (June 1999) introduced piano, keyboards, and clean vocals alongside growls, earning a Swedish Grammy nomination. That year, *Skydancer* and *Of Chaos and Eternal Night* were reissued together. The 2000 album *Haven* leaned further into electronics, drawing mixed reactions. During 2001 touring, Robin Engström filled in on drums while Jivarp was a new father.
*Damage Done* (2002) marked a heavier return, with thicker guitar distortion, atmospheric keyboards, and no clean vocals. A music video for “Monochromatic Stains” and the live DVD *Live Damage* followed. The 2004 compilation *Exposures – In Retrospect and Denial* collected rare and live tracks. *Character* (2005) earned critical praise and the single “Lost to Apathy,” with the band playing Canada for the first time.
*Fiction* (2007) brought back Stanne’s clean vocals and featured a female guest vocalist for the first time since *Projector*, blending the styles of earlier albums. The band toured North America with The Haunted, Into Eternity, and Scar Symmetry, and later the UK with Omnium Gatherum and the US with Arch Enemy.
