Plot
Der Langrisser was among the first tactical RPGs to let the player choose between different story paths. The protagonist, Erwin, can shift his allegiance among three factions: the Descendants of Light, the Rayguard Empire, and the Demon Tribe, or he can form his own faction opposing all three. Erwin starts on the side of the Descendants of Light, fighting the Rayguard Empire, which has allied with the Dark Lord Böser to unify the continent, unaware that Böser is the source of the conflicts. The Empire seeks the two legendary swords, Alhazard and Langrisser, to achieve its goal. The Descendants of Light, led by Jessica, aim to prevent the Empire from obtaining Langrisser. Erwin's rival, Leon, commands the Empire's Blue Dragon Knights and often blocks Erwin's progress. When the two find themselves working together, Leon suggests Erwin join the Empire, a choice left to the player. If Erwin sides with the Empire, the Descendants of Light become the antagonists, and former enemies become allies. The decision forces Erwin to kill opposing commanders to secure peace.
Characters
Elwin is a wandering swordsman seeking his instructor's murderer, which he finds only on the light path. Hein, a young magician, is the only character playable on all paths. Liana, a shrine maiden who lost her parents at birth, had her twin sister kidnapped; in the light and independent endings, she runs an orphanage funded by Elwin, unless the player kills her in the final battle. Scott is the adopted son and heir of the Lord of Salrath Country. Rohga, a mercenary for hire, follows the player on every path except the light path. Cherie, a rebellious princess of Kalxath Kingdom, has a crush on Elwin and confesses her love if killed on the Imperial path. Keith is the retainer of Kalxath and commander of its aerial knights. Jessica is the avatar of the goddess Lusiris, playable only in the Sega Genesis version. Lester is a former pirate protecting Jessica. Aaron is an old swordsman who has long observed the world. Leon, a young idealistic knight leading the Blue Dragon Knights, is a descendant of light like Elwin and Cherie. Imelda commands the Water Dragon Navy coldly and narcissistically. Vargas, strong as a bear, is General of the Blazing Dragon Army. Egbert, General of the Dark Dragon Sorcerers and Kaiser's counsel, was a student of Jessica who joins the Empire to fight the rising darkness. Esto is a parasitic monster loyal to Böser. Osto is a minion of darkness craving human flesh. Sonya is a half-human, half-demon girl with a grudge against humanity. Lána, Liana's long-lost twin kidnapped after birth, has feelings for Leon. Böser, the Prince of Darkness, has sown discord in El Sallia since ancient times.
