Jasper
A powerful Quartz warrior of Homeworld and a veteran of its ancient war against the Crystal Gems.
Jasper is a Homeworld Gem soldier and one of the primary antagonists during the second act of the series. She arrives on Earth with Peridot as a hostile envoy of the Gem empire, after the release of Lapis Lazuli puts the Crystal Gems at risk. Known for her immense physical strength and rigid adherence to combat prowess, she serves as a foil to the Crystal Gems philosophy of coexistence.
Lore & Background
As a warrior caste Gem, Jasper was designed for conflict and enforcement. This ideology puts her at odds with the reformed Homeworld Gems who seek peace. Her presence on Earth marks a significant escalation in tension between the two factions. This contradiction fuels a rivalry that culminates in a forced fusion with Lapis Lazuli. The resulting fusion, Malachite, is a destructive force; in the third season Jasper is defeated and captured.
Reader's Guide
Jasper represents a specific Gem variety, distinct from sub-types like Ruby or Sapphire. She embodies Homeworld militarism, valuing physical dominance above all else. This philosophy drives her conflict with the Crystal Gems, particularly Garnet. Relationships define her arc significantly. Her dynamic with Lapis Lazuli is purely antagonistic; she forces a fusion that results in the unstable Gem Malachite. The Diamonds later help Steven heal the corrupted Gems the Crystal Gems had captured, including Jasper. Initially sent to retrieve Steven, she becomes an obstacle for the Crystal Gems. Steven Universe Future shows her defeated and resentful, living in self-imposed exile in the woods; she is shattered in a rematch with Steven and swears loyalty to him after he repairs her gemstone. At the end of Steven Universe Future she is seen living in Little Homeworld.
