Production

Rebecca Sugar learned in 2016 that Steven Universe would be canceled after the fifth season; she persuaded Cartoon Network to allow a follow-up film, Steven Universe: The Movie. The network approved the movie and also green-lit an additional season of 26 episodes, of which 6 extended the original fifth season and the remaining 20 became Steven Universe Future. Writer Kate Tsang, who also worked on Adventure Time: Distant Lands, said she could write what she wanted to see and that the series had a heart and optimism that influenced her 2022 film Marvelous and the Black Hole. The opening theme, "Steven Universe Future", is a new version of "Happily Ever After" from the movie, performed by Zach Callison, Estelle, Michaela Dietz, Deedee Magno Hall, Jennifer Paz, Shelby Rabara, Uzo Aduba, and Grace Rolek. The series includes queer and non-binary representation: Shep, Sadie's romantic interest, is a person of color referred to with gender-neutral language and voiced by non-binary actor Indya Moore; reviewers suggest Sadie may be queer. Stevonnie, the intersex and non-binary fusion of Steven and Connie, appears in the episode "Bismuth Casual".

Release

Before the announcement of Future, Sugar and the crew remained silent about a potential sixth season, leaving fans uncertain; some believed The Movie was the conclusion. At New York Comic Con in October 2019, Sugar confirmed there would be no sixth season and announced Future, sharing its opening. Several media outlets misinterpreted this as a sixth season with Future as a subtitle. The official premise stated: "After saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people's problems to solve, he'll finally have to face his own." The series premiered on Cartoon Network on December 7, 2019, and on Cartoon Network UK on December 23, 2019. All 20 episodes were released on the Steven Universe: The Complete Collection DVD on December 8, 2020.

Reception

Steven Universe Future received critical acclaim. Critics praised its characterization, themes, animation, voice acting, music, and LGBT representation, particularly its exploration of Steven's tendency to solve others' problems and its focus on the aftermath of the main storyline. Reviewers noted it addressed issues some had with the original series, such as overly simple problem-solving and the redemption of all antagonists. Caroline Cao of /Film called it "a messy and beautiful tale of trauma, healing, and survival," praising the visual maximalism and the flexible Fusion metaphor. She highlighted Steven's recurring lesson of biting off more than he can chew, his struggles with his new Gem power manifesting through rage, and the series' messages about victimhood and survivorhood solidarity. The episode "Fragments" was nominated for the 2020 Primetime Emmy Award for Short Form Animated Program.

Future

Rebecca Sugar confirmed that Steven Universe Future is the series finale of the franchise, with no continuation in development or ongoing projects, but hinted at possible future stories. She stated: "The story is continuing off screen and I do know what happens next...But I would have to decide how and when I'd want to dig into that, or if it's best to give them their privacy." She later told Fast Company she was interested in spending more time in the world but wanted to give Steven time to heal and her team a break. In November 2023, Sugar reiterated her desire for a potential revival, suggesting the show could return if public demand is high. In June 2025, a spin-off titled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars was announced.
