Plot
Several months after Steven's meltdown, in which he became a monster due to repressed trauma, he is back to normal. He tells his best friend Connie about his plan to leave Beach City and travel the country, having informed everyone except the Gems. He worries about their reaction and hopes to let them down gently. Steven shares homemade Cookie Cat ice cream sandwiches with Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl.
The Gems sing the Cookie Cat jingle, in which the mascot "left his family behind," allowing Steven to announce he is moving out the next day. He urges them not to talk him out of it, but they take the news lightly and express pride in his desire for independence. Bismuth, Lapis, and Peridot are distraught when he tells them; he gives Peridot his old pink shirt, Lapis an art kit, and Bismuth the Crystal Gems' old battle flag. Jasper tries to insist on accompanying him for protection, but Steven assures her he can protect himself.
Back at the Temple, Steven gives Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl their farewell gifts: Amethyst gets his old video games, Pearl his ukulele, and Garnet the wedding plan book he used for Ruby and Sapphire's wedding. All three accept nonchalantly. His father Greg suggests they are trying to be supportive. Steven encourages Greg to move into his room in the beach house.
After saying farewells and kissing Connie goodbye, Steven drives off but soon returns to confront the Gems about their light reaction. They burst into tears, explaining they did not want their sadness to prevent his leaving, and assure him they will always be part of his future. Everyone says they love each other, and Steven drives away as Beach City's citizens wave goodbye.
Reception
The episode was watched by 0.74 million people. Critics received it favorably, praising the themes and the conclusion of Steven's character arc. Shamus Kelley of Den of Geek admired Steven's comfort in accepting help from others and felt the series ended as it had to. Jourdain Searles of The A.V. Club gave the finale a B, noting that ending on a quiet, uneventful episode was correct given the series' focus on Steven coming to terms with his pain.
Future
Series creator Rebecca Sugar has confirmed that this is the franchise's finale and that no continuation is in development, though she has hinted at possible future stories, stating that the story continues off-screen and she knows what happens next but must decide how and when to explore it. Sugar later told Fast Company she is interested in spending more time in this world but wants to give Steven time to heal and her team a break, adding she is not certain what will happen and will take time to reevaluate before jumping into new ideas. In a later interview marking 10 years since the original series' premiere, Sugar told Variety she would be interested in making a revival if demand is high enough, urging fans to make noise to make it impossible to ignore. In June 2025, a spin-off titled Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars was announced.
