Plot
Steven awakens in a prison cell on a Gem warship after being knocked unconscious by Jasper. The cell door is a force field that neutralizes Gem strength, but Steven passes through unharmed. He finds an unfamiliar Gem, Ruby, and disrupts the force field with his body so she can escape. They search for Ruby's companion, Sapphire, following the sound of her singing.
They encounter Lapis Lazuli, who insists Steven leave her in her cell. Ruby runs off impatiently. Steven finds and frees Sapphire. Garnet sends Steven to free Amethyst and Pearl.
Jasper confronts Garnet, who sings "Stronger Than You" during their fight. Steven, Amethyst, and Pearl overpower Peridot and take control of the ship. Garnet and Jasper's battle destroys the power core, causing the ship to crash-land on Earth as Peridot flees in an escape pod. Jasper convinces Lapis to fuse with her into Malachite, but Lapis drags the fusion into the ocean to subdue Jasper. The episode ends with Steven receiving a frantic phone call from Connie.
Production
The episode was written and storyboarded by Joe Johnston, Jeff Liu, and series creator Rebecca Sugar, and directed by co-executive producer Ian Jones-Quartey. Ki-Yong Bae and Jin-Hee Park provided animation direction, and Elle Michalka served as art director. Jasper's fighting style in the combat scene with Garnet pays homage to the video game character Sonic the Hedgehog. Johnston noted that Ruby and Sapphire's fusion dance references a dance between Pazu and Sheeta in Castle in the Sky.
Garnet being a fusion had been foreshadowed earlier in the series, and Sugar intended this since the pilot episode. The song "Stronger Than You" was written by Sugar and arranged by Aivi & Surasshu, performed by Estelle as Garnet. Estelle's vocals were recorded over a demo by Jeff Liu. Sugar wanted an arrangement that captured the feeling that Garnet could not lose. To emphasize Garnet's new form, the timbre of the bass was changed.
Broadcast and reception
The episode premiered on Cartoon Network on March 12, 2015, with 1.697 million viewers and a Nielsen household rating of 0.4. It aired as part of a "Stevenbomb" programming event with new episodes each day for five days. Although written as the 52nd episode of the first season, it aired as the 49th. Critics gave positive attention to the animation quality and the song "Stronger Than You," performed by Estelle. Eric Thurm of The A.V. Club called the song "funky as hell," and Estelle received praise for her succinct lines. The episode received two nominations at the 43rd Annie Awards: Best Animated TV/Broadcast Production For Children's Audience and Outstanding Achievement, Storyboarding in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production, but did not win either.
