Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Twin Assassins fight Templar control in Victorian London.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Assassin's Creed Syndicate, a 2015 action-adventure title from Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft, is the ninth main game in the Assassin's Creed franchise. It follows 2014's Assassin's Creed Unity. The story takes place in London during 1868, at the start of the Second Industrial Revolution, and centers on twin Assassins Jacob and Evie Frye as they work to free the city from Templar control. The framing narrative is set in the 21st century, featuring the same unseen protagonist from Unity, who helps the Assassins locate a hidden artifact in London before the Templars do. The game also includes segments set in 1916, during World War I, following Jacob's granddaughter, Lydia Frye.

Played from a third-person perspective, the game's open world is explored on foot or by carriage. Syndicate introduces new travel systems to the series, along with refined combat and stealth mechanics. Players control both Jacob and Evie, switching between them during and outside of missions. The game received positive reviews for its visuals, characters, narrative, and level design, though its combat, open-world design, and vehicle gameplay drew some criticism. It was nominated for several awards, including Best Action/Adventure at The Game Awards 2015. By the end of 2015, Syndicate had sold around 4.5 million units, making it less financially successful than earlier entries. Ubisoft attributed this to series fatigue, partly caused by the disappointing release of Assassin's Creed Unity the year before, and decided to end the annual release cycle. The next main entry, Assassin's Creed Origins, set in Ptolemaic Egypt, launched in October 2017 as a soft reboot with more role-playing mechanics and a new modern-day storyline.

After launch, Syndicate received downloadable content, including three story expansions. The most notable, Jack the Ripper, is set twenty years after the main campaign and involves Jacob's pursuit of the famous unidentified serial killer.

Gameplay is similar to Unity, with linear missions and a free-roaming open world. The world, composed of seven boroughs of Victorian London, is larger than previous games. The city guard is replaced by a Victorian police force that only attacks if a crime is committed in their presence; the main enemy is a Templar-controlled street gang called the Blighters.
