In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, this device becomes the central objective for both Rey and Kylo Ren as they race to control the final stand against the First Order. Originally buried with a Sith assassin named Ochi on Pasaana, the wayfinder contains the specific coordinates required to bypass the treacherous hyperspace anomalies shielding Exegol from discovery.

One such device was entrusted to Ochi, a Sith assassin tasked with finding young Rey on Jakku after her parents hid her there. When Ochi failed to kill Rey and instead killed her parents, he took the wayfinder back to Pasaana, where he died. The artifact remained hidden in his ship until a year after the Battle of Crait, when Kylo Ren obtained it through a Force bond with Rey. This connection allowed Ren to travel directly to Exegol, revealing himself as the power behind Snoke and the First Order, while Palpatine unveiled an armada of Star Destroyers known as the Final Order.

To locate Exegol, one must first acquire a Sith wayfinder containing its coordinates. The journey begins on Pasaana, where the initial clue—a dagger inscribed with Sith text—is found in Ochi's remains. Since C-3PO cannot translate this due to programming restrictions, the data must be extracted from his memory by a skilled droidsmith like Babu Frik on Kijimi. Once coordinates are obtained, travelers can follow them to a moon in the Endor system, where the physical wayfinder is hidden within the wreckage of the second Death Star. If this device is destroyed, as happened when Kylo Ren defeated Rey in a duel, an alternative path exists: using the wayfinder previously held by Ben Solo.
