2001 Albert Pujols Signing
Albert Pujols arrives in St. Louis.
During spring training in 2001, first baseman Mark McGwire urged manager Tony La Russa to promote Albert Pujols to the major league roster, and the Cardinals did. Pujols was unanimously named NL Rookie of the Year after setting a league rookie record with 130 RBIs. With Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen he formed the "MV3", and in his Cardinals career he won three MVP awards and hit .326 with 469 home runs. He returned for his final season in 2022, and his number 5 has not been reissued.
