1996 Tony La Russa Hiring
Tony La Russa takes over the Cardinals.
Tony La Russa replaced Joe Torre as Cardinals manager in the spring of 1996, the year a new ownership group led by William DeWitt Jr. bought the club. In 2001 he promoted the young Albert Pujols to the major league roster after spring training. La Russa's Cardinals won the World Series in 2006 and 2011, and after the 2011 title he retired, the only manager to do so right after winning the championship. He is in the Baseball Hall of Fame; Mike Matheny succeeded him.
