1982 Whitey Herzog Championship
Whiteyball and the 1982 world title.
Under manager Whitey Herzog and his "Whiteyball" style of play, the Cardinals returned to the World Series three times in the 1980s. A key trade in 1982 sent shortstop Garry Templeton to the Padres for Ozzie Smith. That season the Cardinals won the National League and beat the American League champion Milwaukee Brewers in seven games in the 1982 World Series, their first title since 1967 and ninth overall. Herzog is in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
