Eckenstein’s father, a Jewish socialist from Bonn, fled Prussia after the failed 1848 revolution; his mother was English. His sisters were Lina Eckenstein, a polymath feminist, and Amelia, who married Julius Cyriax. A railway engineer, he worked for the International Railway Congress Association in Brussels and was an early member of the National Liberal Club. He collected a large archive on explorer Richard Burton, which he donated to the Royal Asiatic Society before his death. In 1918, at age 58, he married Margery Edwards; they had no children.
