Kat (often written as KAT) is a Polish heavy metal band that started in Katowice in 1979. They are widely seen as one of the most important acts in Polish and Central European heavy metal, and are also noted as early pioneers of thrash metal. Their best-known album, *Oddech wymarłych światów* (The Breath of Extinct Worlds), is considered a masterpiece of Polish heavy metal. The band is famous for songs like "Czas zemsty" (Time of Revenge), "Łza dla cieniów minionych" (A Tear for the Shadows Gone), and "Wyrocznia" (Oracle). The name "Kat" means "executioner." A former member was Roman Kostrzewski.
The band was founded by guitarist Piotr Luczyk, who first brought in drummer Ireneusz Loth, then bassist Tomasz Jaguś and second guitarist Ryszard Pisarski. Initially, they played instrumental music inspired by hard rock bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sabbath. In 1981, at the first Silesian Rock festival, they found singer Roman Kostrzewski. The lineup was completed by guitarist Wojciech Mrowiec, and in 1984 they released their debut single, "Noce szatana / Ostatni tabor." Robert 'Lor' Milewski wrote the lyrics for both songs; after that, Kostrzewski took over as lyricist, drawing on poetry, Polish folklore, and mysticism. The band toured with Hanoi Rocks.
In 1986, KAT released their first album, *Metal and Hell*, through the Belgian label Ambush Records with producer Jos Kloek. A Polish-language version came out the following year, in 1987, titled *666*. Soon after, Wojciech Mrowiec was fired. In 1987, KAT twice opened for Metallica at Katowice's Spodek arena; those shows were later captured on the live album *38 Minutes of Life*, which was released in 1990. That year, they also supported Running Wild, Helloween, and Overkill.
A year after the Metallica concerts, in 1988, KAT released *Oddech wymarłych światów*. A conflict then erupted between Luczyk and Kostrzewski, and the band went on hiatus. They resumed activity in 1990 and played with TSA and Acid Drinkers at the Jarocin Festival in 1992. The album *Bastard* (1992) was a studio album featuring new material, not recordings from that festival.
In 1994, the band recorded the album *Ballady* (Ballads) at the Christian studio Deo Recording in Wisła, a move intended to counter public and media accusations of Satanism.
