Synopsis
In 2007, 11-year-old fraternal twins Kim Woo-jin and Kim Bum-gyun, along with their neuroscientist father Dr. Kim Kyu-chul, witness the arrival of a female humanoid alien. The family takes her in, and Woo-jin names her Byul. Dr. Kim discovers that Byul brought advanced technology capable of recording and locking memories, converting them into video. He isolates himself to study her in the Beta Project, leading Bum-gyun to believe Byul has taken their father captive, while Woo-jin thinks their father abandoned them. In 2017, Woo-jin, now a 21-year-old neuroscience student, investigates a series of suicides at his university that he suspects are linked to Bum-gyun, who has been searching for aliens. Woo-jin meets Han Jung-yeon, a computer science student who resembles Byul and believes the suicides are murders. In 2037, South Korea is divided into Normal Earth, a polluted crime-ridden area, and Smart Earth, a clean crime-free city. Each episode except the last has two parts: Beta Project (2017) and A Great New World (2037). The plots merge in the final episode, Circle: One World.
Cast
Yeo Jin-goo portrays Kim Woo-jin in the Beta Project storyline and Circulate 3 in A Great New World. Jung Ji-hoon plays young Woo-jin. Woo-jin is a 21-year-old second-year neuroscience student at Handam University of Science and Technology in 2017, the younger twin brother of Bum-gyun and son of Dr. Kim Kyu-chul. As a child, he was enthusiastic about UFOs and extraterrestrial life, but his passion faded after his father disappeared with Byul. In 2017, he reunites with Byul (now Han Jung-yeon) and investigates serial suicides with Detective Hong Jin-hong. Kim Kang-woo plays Kim Joon-hyuk, who is the future and amnesiac Kim Bum-gyun. Ahn Woo-yeon plays 21-year-old Kim Bum-gyun, and Kim Ye-jun plays young Bum-gyun. In 2037, Joon-hyuk is a 41-year-old violent crimes detective from Normal Earth who enters Smart Earth to investigate cases, aided by Detective Hong Jin-hong and the alien hacker Bluebird. Twenty years earlier, as Bum-gyun, he was obsessed with aliens and was institutionalized; by 2017, he investigates the Handam University suicides he believes are alien-related. He later loses his memories, and Detective Hong gives him the name Joon-hyuk. Gong Seung-yeon plays Han Jung-yeon, also known as Byul and Bluebird. She is a humanoid extraterrestrial who arrived in 2007, initially naked and mute. She learns Korean from Woo-jin, who names her Byul. She is semi-immortal and brought memory-recording technology. After being studied by Dr. Kim, she loses her memories and is adopted by Professor Han Yong-woo, who names her Han Jung-yeon. In 2037, she becomes a hacker codenamed Bluebird. Lee Gi-kwang plays Lee Ho-soo.
