Satan's Slaves 2: Communion

Joko Anwar wrote and directed *Satan's Slaves 2: Communion* (Indonesian: *Pengabdi Setan 2: Communion*), a 2022 supernatural horror film. It follows the 2017 film *Satan's Slaves*, which itself was based on the 1980 film *Satan's Slave*. This sequel became the first Indonesian movie to be released in IMAX.

The plot begins in 1955, when journalist Budiman is called by his friend, police commander Heru, to Bosscha Observatory. There, dozens of exhumed corpses lie facing a portrait of Mawarni, suggesting a cult ritual. Heru, wanting to avoid harming Indonesia’s image before the Bandung Conference, asks Budiman to publish the story in obscure magazines. In 1984, Rini, her brothers Toni and Bondi, and their father Bahri live in a rundown Jakarta apartment complex. Bahri works odd jobs and keeps a locked briefcase. Budiman, now an occult magazine editor, receives Heru’s suicide note with photos and drawings hinting at a cult gathering at the Mandara Apartments, and revealing that Bahri was a police officer present in 1955. The apartment’s lift malfunctions, killing several tenants, and a storm floods the building. Rini comforts a boy named Wisnu, whose mother died in the lift; Wisnu and his mother used a sign language from an occult book to avoid his abusive father. The flood cuts power, and supernatural events plague the residents. Bondi finds photos showing the cult meets every 29 years on April 17—the next day. Toni discovers a hidden room with photos of their deceased mother Mawarni, identified as Raminom, and recalls she began resembling Raminom after her music career. Rini opens Bahri’s briefcase to find severed fingers. They find their deaf youngest brother Ian on the top floor; Wisnu communicates with him in sign language, and Ian says he is a friend. Corpses rise and, with Raminom, kill the remaining tenants. Surrounded by the undead, the siblings and Wisnu are captured by the cult. They wake on a secret top floor where the communion begins. Ian commands the cult and cheerfully has Bahri quartered. Budiman arrives, shoots cult members, and repels Raminom. Wisnu, using sign language, orders the cult to stop as Rini knocks Ian unconscious.
