Above him, the ventilation shafts hummed a low, indifferent drone, filtering out just enough poison to keep them alive but not enough to make breathing easy. Dax paused, wiping sweat from his brow with a rag that was more grime than fabric. He looked up at the faint red glow of the artificial sun far above, a world he would never see. His hands were calloused and raw, the skin toughened by years of striking rock. Beside him, another miner coughed, the sound swallowed instantly by the cavernous dark. They did not speak; there was no need. The rhythm of the work was their only conversation, a silent pact to survive until the shift bell rang.
