Bajie is introduced as an old friend of Sun Wukong from the events of *Journey to the West*. He is imprisoned in the Gold Cymbals in The New West, a cold mountainous region. During a battle between the Destined One and Kang-Jin Star, she crashes into the cymbals, freeing Bajie. He immediately joins the Destined One's quest to recover the six relics. At The Webbed Ridge, the Second Sister of a spider guai family captures Bajie and brings him to the matriarch, the Violet Spider. The Destined One rescues him. Later, it is revealed that Bajie and the Violet Spider were once lovers. After the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master mortally wounds the Violet Spider, the spider sisters and the Destined One defeat him. Bajie and the Violet Spider share a final glance, but Bajie sorrowfully turns away and walks toward the reappeared Envious Tongue relic. In the Flaming Mountains, Bajie fights alongside the Destined One against Red Boy, the son of the Bull King and Princess Fair Fox. After Red Boy kills himself, the Grieved Body relic reemerges. Bajie returns with the Destined One to Mount Huaguo, where they retrieve Sun Wukong's armor and Jingubang. The Old Monkey reveals that the Destined One is the mind of Sun Wukong, and Bajie witnesses the final battle against Wukong's broken shell.

After the Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master killed her, Bajie turned away from her body, his face unreadable, and walked toward the relic. In the Flaming Mountains, he fought beside the Destined One against Red Boy, the Bull King's son. When Red Boy consumed the Grieved Body relic and then killed himself, Bajie stood silent as the relic reappeared. Finally, on Mount Huaguo, he helped retrieve Sun Wukong's armor and Jingubang, and watched as the Destined One faced the broken shell. The Old Monkey's words echoed: the Destined One was Wukong's mind, and the circlet would bind him—or not.
