Willie Waddell

The outside right who became a two-time champion manager and director.

William Waddell (7 March 1921 – 14 October 1992) was a professional footballer and manager whose entire playing career was spent with Rangers. As an outside right, he made 317 recognised appearances, interrupted by World War II service where he played over 200 unofficial matches. He earned 18 caps for Scotland between 1946 and 1954, scoring six goals. His club success included four League titles and two Scottish Cups. Later, as manager of Kilmarnock, he guided them to their only league title in 1964–65 before returning to Rangers to lead the club to its sole continental trophy, the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1972.

Waddell's playing days were defined by his role as an outside right for Rangers during a period that spanned both sides of World War II. He made his debut at just 17 in a friendly against Arsenal. His international career began after eight unofficial wartime matches, leading to 18 official caps for Scotland between 1946 and 1954. He was also selected for the Scottish League XI five times, establishing himself as a key figure in the Gers team that dominated wartime competitions.

Waddell's managerial path began at Kilmarnock in 1957. Under his guidance from 1960 to 1964, the club achieved four runners-up league placings and reached three cup finals (1959–60 Scottish Cup, 1961 League Cup, 1963 League Cup), all lost. Success finally came in 1964–65 with their only league championship to date. His record there included 389 competitive matches with 215 wins (a 55% ratio). Returning to Rangers in 1969, he focused on rebuilding the club after the 1971 Ibrox disaster. He is credited with reconstructing Ibrox Stadium in the late 1970s and early 1980s. After resigning as general manager in 1975, he served as a consultant until June 1981 but remained a director of the club until his death on 14 October 1992.
