Terry Butcher

Captain who led Rangers to three League titles and two Scottish League Cups between 1986 and 1990.

In July 1986, Terry Butcher arrived at Ibrox from Ipswich Town for £725,000, becoming one of the first 'English invasion' players appointed by manager Graeme Souness. Serving as captain, he guided Rangers to three League titles in four seasons and two Scottish League Cups. His tenure was marked by intense physicality, including a broken leg against Aberdeen in November 1987 that sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign. Off-field drama also occurred; after kicking a referee's room door off its hinges following an October 1987 match at Pittodrie, he faced an SFA fine of £1500. Despite a rejected £1 million bid from Manchester United in July 1988, Butcher remained until his final game in September 1990, a 2–1 league defeat against Dundee United.
