Gough was born in Stockholm, Sweden, to a Swedish mother and Scottish father Charlie Gough, a former Charlton Athletic player. He grew up in South Africa from 1965 and began his career with Wits University. After trials with Rangers, Dundee United, and Aberdeen, he signed for Dundee United in February 1980, winning the Scottish league title in 1982–83 and reaching the European Cup semi-final in 1984. He joined Tottenham Hotspur in 1986, captaining them in the 1987 FA Cup Final, then moved to Rangers in the 1987–88 season for over £1,000,000. He captained Rangers to nine consecutive league titles, winning 9 league titles, 3 Scottish Cups, and 6 League Cups. He later played for Kansas City Wizards, San Jose Clash, Nottingham Forest (on loan), and Everton, retiring in May 2001. He had a brief spell as manager of Livingston and is currently an ambassador for Rangers.

Gough surged forward, his timing impeccable, and met the ball with a thunderous header that sent it flying clear. As the whistle blew moments later, sealing another victory for the nine-in-a-row quest, he didn't celebrate wildly. He simply turned to face the Kop, raising a clenched fist in silent acknowledgment of the roar that greeted him.

Gough is remembered as a commanding central defender and captain who led Rangers to nine successive Scottish league titles. He was named SFWA Footballer of the Year in 1988–89 and was selected in the MLS Best XI in 1997. He played in two World Cups (1986 and 1990) and captained Scotland at Euro 1992.
