Club career

Mark Burchill was born in Broxburn and raised in Livingston, West Lothian. He was educated at St Mary's Academy in Bathgate and St. Margaret's Academy in Livingston. His professional career started with Celtic in the 1997–98 season. Over his first three years there, he netted 20 Scottish Premier League goals from just 17 starts and 33 appearances off the bench.

That impressive scoring rate earned him a spot on the Scotland national team, debuting against Bosnia-Herzegovina in October 1999. In a 2000-01 UEFA Cup qualifier against Jeunesse Esch, he recorded the quickest hat-trick ever in a European club match. Still, he never secured a regular first-team role under Celtic's managers, especially after the arrival of Chris Sutton for £6 million. In September 2000, he joined Birmingham City on a three-month loan, scoring five times in 17 games, mostly as a substitute.

Birmingham wanted to sign him permanently but could not reach a deal. He then moved to Ipswich Town on another three-month loan in February 2001, scoring once against Bradford City.

Coaching career

On 25 March 2013, Burchill was named player/assistant manager of Livingston with Richie Burke as manager. He made his competitive debut for Livingston on 27 July 2013 in a Scottish Challenge Cup match against Berwick Rangers. In December 2014 he was appointed caretaker manager, leading the club to win the 2014–15 Scottish Challenge Cup and securing their Scottish Championship status on the final day. He was sacked midway through the following season with the club second bottom in the Championship. After leaving Livingston, he worked as chief scout at AFC Bournemouth and later followed technical director Richard Hughes to Liverpool's scouting team before the 2024–25 season.
