Dundee United Football Club is a Scottish professional team based in Dundee, formed in 1909 as Dundee Hibernian before adopting their current name in 1923. Known as The Terrors or The Tangerines, with supporters called Arabs, they have played at Tannadice Park since their foundation. After founding the Scottish Premier League in 1998 and remaining ever-present until its 2013 abolition, United faced relegation twice in the last decade. However, they bounced back immediately from their most recent drop by winning the 2023–24 Scottish Championship, returning to the top flight for the 2024–25 season where they finished 4th and secured European qualification.

The club enjoyed its most successful period under manager Jim McLean, who took over in 1971 and implemented a youth policy that kept stars like Dave Narey, Paul Sturrock, and Maurice Malpas for the majority of their careers. Under his guidance, United captured the Scottish League Cup in 1979 and 1980 and won the Premier Division title in 1982–83. Their European pedigree was equally impressive; after qualifying for Europe in 1966–67, they reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1983–84 and the UEFA Cup final in 1987. That final run included eliminating Barcelona twice in competitive ties, maintaining a perfect record against them before losing to IFK Gothenburg in the final. Domestically, they added two Scottish Cups under successors Ivan Golac (1994) and Peter Houston (2010).
