Rocky
The Eridian engineer, last of his crew, and Grace's friend.
Rocky is an Eridian from the planet Erid and a major protagonist of Project Hail Mary, the engineer of the ship Blip-A and the only survivor of its crew of twenty-three, the rest having died of radiation sickness. Like all Eridians he has a photographic memory, no eyes, and speaks in musical tones and chords; Grace calls him Rocky for his rock-like body, and his mate is named Adrian.

Background
About the size of a Labrador, he has five spider-like limbs ending in three triangular fingers, a rough blackish-brown carapace eighteen inches wide, five breathing slits on a pentagonal outcropping, and 'sees' by echolocation. He had been alone in the Tau Ceti system for 46 Earth years when he spotted the Hail Mary's engine light with his Petrovascope, flew to it and threw xenonite cylinders carrying a star map that pointed to 40 Eridani. He built a xenonite tunnel between the ships, tested which panel Grace could see through, and the two built up a vocabulary until they could talk; he then made a hexagonal ball so he could work inside the Hail Mary. With Grace he found the Taumoeba, and when the breed they made ate through xenonite, Grace turned back to save him and his world.
