Background

Shot in the United Kingdom through 2024, with every scene aboard the Hail Mary filmed on a practical set, the film keeps the novel's shape: Grace wakes from an induced coma as the sole survivor of a three-person crew bound for Tau Ceti, remembers in flashbacks how Stratt's Petrova Taskforce recruited him and finally drugged him aboard, meets Rocky, names Adrian and the Taumoeba, and chooses to rescue Rocky rather than go home, sending his logs and samples back in probes. Reviews praised the direction, Gosling, Rocky, the humour and the visuals, and it grossed $684 million worldwide, the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2026.
