Background
Blunt, single-minded and hard to get along with, she is cold to her subordinates and justifies extreme measures by the goal of saving Earth: she condones nuclear means to warm the planet, runs the Astrophage work from a Chinese aircraft carrier nicknamed Stratt's Vat, and speaks several languages, silencing Russian scientists in Russian. She recruits Ryland Grace to study the first Astrophage sample, keeps him close as her scientific right hand as they travel to meet scientists and engineers, and after the explosion that kills the science specialists she has him sedated and put aboard the Hail Mary, with a drug to blank his memory so he cannot sabotage the mission. In the film she is played by Sandra Hüller.
