Background
From space it looks green, which Rocky calls 'medium-rough' on his texture monitor, perhaps from airborne algae or Taumoeba. Astrophage breeds in its carbon dioxide, and the Taumoeba of its upper air keep the Astrophage in check, so Grace and Rocky orbit it and lower a ten-kilometre xenonite chain to collect a sample from its Petrova line, which turns out to hold a whole microbial biosphere. The book treats Adrian as the likely origin of cellular life on Earth and Erid alike. The real exoplanet, with about 3.9 Earth masses and a 168-day orbit, was thought to exist when Weir wrote the novel but is now disputed.
