The bass hits first, low and insistent, before the lights even find the stage. You're in the back of the room, pressed against a wall that's vibrating, and the air smells like warm amplifiers and the faint sweetness of spilled beer. The band on stage is mid-set, the keyboardist's fingers a blur over a synth pad, and the drummer is playing something that sounds like a heartbeat with a stutter. A girl two rows ahead is dancing with her eyes closed, completely lost. The lights snap to a deep red, then kill, and in the black you hear the crowd inhale as one.
