The Hits 2 was released separately from the box set The Hits/The B-Sides, but on the same day. It is one of two discs that, along with The Hits 1, were also sold individually. The album consists of many of Prince's hit singles and fan favorites, with most songs presented in their edited single form.

The Hits 2 includes tracks such as "Kiss" (the single version, first made available on CD here), "Alphabet St.", "7", "Little Red Corvette", "Sexy MF", "Let's Go Crazy", and "Purple Rain" (which are exceptions to the single-edit rule). The disc features contributions from musicians including Lisa Coleman, Sheila E., Wendy Melvoin, and others.

• In the United Kingdom, Hits 2 debuted and peaked at number six on September 25, 1993, and later reached number five two weeks later.
