In Their Own Story

The studio lights hummed a low amber glow over the control room. It was past two in the morning, and the fourth take of the bridge still wasn't right. Prince stood with his back to the glass, fingers drumming a counter-rhythm on the edge of the mixing console. On the other side, Lisa adjusted her keyboard patch while Wendy tuned her bass a half-step down. Mani's sticks tapped a soft, patient pattern on the rim of her snare, waiting.

"Again from the top," Prince said, not turning around. His voice was quiet, almost gentle, but the room went still.

Bobby Z exhaled through his nose. Cat Glover rolled his shoulders. Jerome and Brown Mark checked their amp settings. Dez nodded once. They all knew the drill. They'd done it a hundred times, and they'd do it a hundred more if that's what it took. The click track pulsed, and for one breath the room held perfectly still—then the first chord hit, and the whole studio inhaled together, eight or nine musicians becoming a single instrument for the next four minutes and thirty-two seconds. Prince turned. He smiled. Just barely. But it was enough.
