Plot
After Splinter's death and the Super Shredder's destruction by Leonardo, the Turtles, April O'Neil, Casey Jones, and Karai have moved on. Leonardo takes on more responsibility as sensei. Tiger Claw and an underground cult devoted to the Foot Clan attempt to resurrect the Shredder with the aid of a Demodragon named Kavaxas. In a dimension of anthropomorphic animals in Feudal Japan, the rabbit ronin Miyamoto Usagi must protect an unpleasant Pug named Kintaro, the Golden Child of the Sky Buddha. The wolf wizard Jei transports the Turtles into his reality as mind-controlled hitmen to stop Usagi from reaching the Temple of the Sky Buddha. In an alternate post-apocalyptic future, a mutagen bomb has wiped out humanity and most mutants. An elderly Raphael and a robot containing Donatello's consciousness search the wasteland of New York City. They meet a meerkat named Mira, hunted by a honey badger named Verminator Rex and his biker gang; Mira bears a map to a haven called the Green Paradise or Oasis. The Newtralizer works with Lord Dregg, who has cheated death and seeks revenge. Raphael's Salamandrian girlfriend Mona Lisa and friend Sal Commander arrive seeking help against the Newtralizer. During Halloween, the Turtles and Renet face Savanti Romero, who plans to turn New York into a monster dystopia, sending them back to Transylvania during Count Dracula's age and 1810s Central Europe where Victor Frankenstein creates his monster.
Production
Nickelodeon commissioned a fifth season of the show on July 10, 2015. The season's initial four episodes hit DVD on March 21, 2017, just two days after their television debut. On March 2, 2017, the network confirmed this would be the final season, rebranding it as Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and updating the opening credits. The episodes "The Wasteland Warrior," "The Impossible Desert," and "Carmageddon!" are often compiled as the TV film Raphael: Mutant Apocalypse. Though they were not the final episodes broadcast and are not recognized as official canon by Nickelodeon, they were the last ones produced. Executive producer Ciro Nieli intended them to serve as the series finale to protect the established timeline, despite contradictions with earlier canon. Nickelodeon instead aired these episodes on Nicktoons mid-season and promoted "Wanted: Bebop and Rocksteady" as the official series finale.
