Crew of the Flying Dutchman
Eternal servants of the deep, ferrying souls across the boundary between life and death.
The Crew of the Flying Dutchman serves as the supernatural guardians and ferryers of souls lost at sea. Bound by an ancient curse, these sailors are condemned to serve aboard their ghostly vessel for eternity unless they are relieved of duty by a worthy successor. Originally commanded by Davy Jones, the crew eventually passed leadership to Will Turner after a legendary battle that reshaped the balance between the living and the dead. Unlike normal pirate crews who seek plunder or freedom, this group is bound by obligation rather than greed. They patrol the oceans, collecting those who perish in the water to transport them to the underworld. Their existence is defined by isolation from humanity, as prolonged service physically transforms them into amalgamations of man and marine life.

Lore & Background
The origin of this crew stems from a bargain made with the goddess Calypso. Davy Jones was tasked with collecting every soul that died upon the ocean waves, but he grew weary of his endless duty. When he attempted to abandon his post by hiding his heart in the Dead Man's Chest, the curse deepened. Over time, the crew members began to lose their humanity, their bodies mutating into grotesque forms resembling crabs, fish, and other sea creatures as they merged with their environment.
The curse dictates that they cannot die until their duty is fulfilled or transferred. They are forbidden from touching land except for one day every ten years, a brief respite where they can feel the sun and breathe fresh air before returning to the saltwater prison. Will Turner ultimately broke this cycle by killing Jones in single combat, taking up the Captaincy himself to ensure his father's spirit could find peace.
Reader's Guide
The Crew of the Flying Dutchman operates under a strict supernatural hierarchy led by its Captain, originally Davy Jones and later Will Turner. Their primary goal is to ferry the souls of those who die at sea to the afterlife, a duty imposed by the goddess Calypso. This service binds them to the vessel for eternity unless they are relieved of command. Key members include the cursed sailors themselves, many of whom have transformed into grotesque amalgamations of man and marine life due to their prolonged exposure to the ocean's curse.
Bootstrap Bill Turner served aboard before his death, ensuring his son Will eventually took up the mantle. The crew faces constant conflict with external forces like the East India Trading Company and the Brethren Court, who seek control over Jones or Calypso. Internally, the struggle is against losing one's humanity entirely to the sea. Symbols associated with them include the ship itself, a ghostly vessel that sails through storms unseen by normal eyes. Their existence represents the price of power and the burden of duty in the pirate world.
