Calypso Deity

The sea goddess bound in human form by the first Brethren Court.

Calypso is a sea goddess in Pirates of the Caribbean. Before the events of the films, Davy Jones, then a human sailor, fell in love with her, and she charged him with ferrying the souls of those who died at sea to the next world as captain of the Flying Dutchman, able to step on land only once every ten years.

Lore & Background

When Jones returned to shore after ten years of service, Calypso failed to appear. Feeling betrayed, he made a secret agreement with the first Brethren Court, which bound her into human form. To break the curse she needs the Pieces of Eight of all nine Pirate Lords. She lives as Tia Dalma, who tells the story of Davy Jones and Calypso without revealing that she is Calypso herself. In At World's End, Sao Feng mistakes Elizabeth for Calypso; once Calypso is freed and learns of Jones's role in her capture, she refuses to help either the pirates or Jones. The Battle of Calypso's Maelstrom takes its name from her.
