Before his transformation, Kuma was a fierce pirate and a high-ranking commander in the Revolutionary Army under Dragon. To ensure the safety of their daughter, Bonney, who suffered from a fatal disease requiring treatment found in the capital, Kuma struck a deal with Dr. Vegapunk and the World Government. He volunteered to become the prototype for the 'Pacifista' cyborgs, a process that would eventually erase his mind and turn him into an obedient weapon.
