History
Maugrim first appears in the story when the Pevensie children find Mr. Tumnus's cave ransacked, learning that the faun was arrested by the Secret Police for not handing over Lucy Pevensie. He is initially seen guarding the entrance to the White Witch's castle, where he accepts Edmund's message and lets him inside. Described as a huge grey beast with flaming eyes, far too large to be a dog, Maugrim is dispatched by the White Witch along with his fastest wolves to the Beavers' house, ordered to kill anyone there and then rush to the Stone Table if the Beavers and Edmund's siblings have already fled.
The wolves find the house empty, and the witch's harsh winter prevents them from picking up any tracks or scent. They travel through the snowy night to the Stone Table, but by the time they arrive the snow has melted and the witch is forced to proceed on foot. As Aslan's army gathers near the Stone Table, Maugrim leaps from the bushes and attacks Susan Pevensie. Peter kills him, earning the title Sir Peter Wolfsbane.
Aslan's creatures follow Maugrim's subordinate wolf to the White Witch, allowing them to rescue Edmund. Upon learning of Maugrim's death, the witch sends that same wolf to summon her army to her current position. In Prince Caspian, Peter retrieves his sword Rhindon from Cair Paravel's treasury, noting that with it he killed the Wolf.
Media appearances
In the 1967 TV serial, Robert Booth portrayed Maugrim. The 1979 animated adaptation uses the name Fenris Ulf, the early U.S. edition name. Martin Stone later played a werewolf in Prince Caspian that Peter and Edmund killed, alongside a hag and the dwarf Nikabrik, who had enlisted their help to resurrect the White Witch in an attempt to defeat King Miraz. Maugrim is mentioned in Susanne Sundfør's song "Turkish Delight" from her album The Brothel.
