In Their Own Story

The Parisian evening smelled of rain and exhaust. Marinette—no, Ladybug—perched on a rain-slicked chimney, her red mask catching the amber glow of a streetlamp three floors below. Somewhere in the Marais, a newly akumatized woman was hurling boulders of compressed glass at a bakery, and the crowd was screaming. Ladybug unspooled her yo-yo, feeling the familiar tug of the lasso against her wrist, and swung. The wind tore at her spotted bodysuit. She landed in a crouch on a fire escape, Tikki's soft voice crackling from the bracelet: "You've got this, Marinette." She closed her eyes, thought of a single, perfect object—a child's plastic bucket, oversized, bright yellow—and whispered the words. The bucket materialized in her palm, absurd and gleaming. She grinned behind the mask. "Lucky Charm." Then she was gone, a red-and-black streak arcing over the rooftops toward the chaos, the Eiffel Tower a dark silhouette behind her, indifferent and eternal.
