The relationship between a Guardian and the Kwamis is intimate and spiritual. The Kwamis, with their centuries of memory and their deep affection for their partners, look to the Guardian as a parent or elder figure. A Guardian who is kind, patient, and just earns the Kwamis' trust; one who is cold or power-hungry risks their loyalty. This dynamic means the Guardianship is not merely a political office but a moral one, judged by the very spirits it oversees.

Secrecy is the Guardian's first law. Revealing one's identity would collapse the delicate balance of the system, inviting villains to target the Box or the Guardian directly. For this reason, Guardians operate in the shadows, intervening only when the stakes demand it. The Guardian's toolkit is minimal—the Miraculous Box and the authority to speak to any Kwami—but the responsibility is total: every jewel, every spirit, every holder falls under their watch.

Past Guardians are referenced only in fragments and whispers within the Kwamis' memories, suggesting a long, sometimes troubled lineage. The current Guardian, Agreste, is revealed in Season 3, and her relationship with the system is complicated by her family's history and the personal stakes tied to her son, Gabriel.
