Background
Minnesota first beat the 12-3 New Orleans Saints and then went to San Francisco and beat the top-seeded 49ers, who had the league's best record at 13-2, by 36-24. In that game Anthony Carter caught 10 passes for an NFL playoff record 227 yards and Reggie Rutland returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown. In the NFC Championship Game on January 17, 1988, the Washington Redskins held the Vikings to 76 rushing yards, sacked them eight times and won 17-10; Washington went on to win the Super Bowl. It was the Vikings' first NFC Championship Game in ten years.
