Background
In the Western Conference championship on December 27, 1969, the Vikings hosted the Los Angeles Rams in the cold and snow, three weeks after winning 20-13 in Los Angeles. Minnesota won the rematch 23-20 despite committing more turnovers, the first postseason victory in franchise history. On January 4, 1970, they beat the Cleveland Browns 27-7 in the NFL Championship Game at Metropolitan Stadium. A week later they lost Super Bowl IV 23-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs. The defense allowed only 133 points during the regular season. It was the first of three straight seasons in which the Vikings had the NFL's best record.
