Background
The game matched two of the league's best defenses, Pittsburgh's Steel Curtain and Minnesota's Purple People Eaters, and two future Hall of Fame quarterbacks, Terry Bradshaw and Fran Tarkenton. The Vikings had gone 10-4 and beaten the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs. Steelers running back Franco Harris rushed for a then Super Bowl record 158 yards and a touchdown, more than the whole Minnesota offense, and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. With the win the Steelers became the last of the NFL's 'Original Eight' teams to win a league championship.
