Protheans who survived the last cycle in cryopreservation on Ilos used the Conduit to re-enter the Citadel and sabotage it, so that the Reapers could not activate the station, itself an enormous mass relay, from outside.
Reader's Guide
The Conduit is the goal of the main story in Mass Effect and the route to the final battle on the Citadel.
A recording of Saren and Matriarch Benezia first mentions the Conduit. Liara T'Soni pinpoints its location on Ilos, and the Prothean VI Vigil explains its purpose. During the geth invasion of the Citadel, Saren uses the Conduit to reach the station so that Sovereign can activate the Citadel mass relay; Shepard fights through geth forces at the Conduit to confront him.
