The shield's history involves significant retcons regarding its origin. In 2001, a story revealed that King T'Chaka of Wakanda gave Steve Rogers vibranium in early 1941 after the Red Skull crushed his original triangular steel shield. This led to the creation of the circular vibranium alloy shield by Myron MacLain, who accidentally discovered the material while experimenting and subsequently fell asleep during the process. The shield's durability has been tested repeatedly; it was disintegrated by the Molecule Man in The Avengers #215–216, shattered by Thanos in The Infinity Gauntlet, and destroyed by the Serpent in Fear Itself. In each instance, the shield was restored, sometimes with enhancements like uru metal or through the reality-warping wishes of the Beyonder.

In Their Own Story

In Captain America Comics #2 (April 1941), Steve Rogers first wielded the circular shield after his original triangular design was retired due to complaints from rival publisher MLJ. Decades later, during a battle in World War II depicted in the 2010 series Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers, Azzari provided a vibranium shield that helped incapacitate the Red Skull after he crushed Steve's first triangular shield. The narrative shifted when President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented the circular shield to Rogers in March 1981's Captain America #255. After Rogers' death, S.H.I.E.L.D. took custody until Bucky Barnes reclaimed it, eventually returning it to a resurrected Steve Rogers following the Fear Itself storyline where the Serpent destroyed it.
