The Black Panther identity belongs to T'Challa, the king and protector of the fictional African nation of Wakanda. T'Challa relies on wealth and advanced Wakandan technology to combat enemies, alongside enhanced abilities achieved through drinking the essence of the heart-shaped herb. Early concept art for the character used the name Coal Tiger and featured a swashbuckler design before Lee requested revisions. In the published version of Fantastic Four #52, the cowl was changed from one exposing the face to a full facemask. T'Challa is a scientist comparable to Reed Richards, utilizing his nation's technology rather than describing specific suit features like energy redistribution or form-shifting.

T'Challa, son of T'Chaka, rules Wakanda, a society advanced by deposits of the fictional metal vibranium. He combines this with proficiency in science, expertise in tradition, rigorous physical training, and hand-to-hand combat skills. In the late 1990s, Christopher Priest re-invented the character to emphasize Wakanda's independence. Later, during Reginald Hudlin's run, T'Challa married Storm of the X-Men, though this was annulled in a subsequent storyline. When T'Challa was briefly in a coma, his sister Shuri took on the role of Black Panther and leadership of Wakanda.
