Cyclops emits powerful beams of energy from his eyes, called optic blasts. They look like red light and strike with massive concussive force, and he can only control them with special eyewear that he must always wear.

Reader's Guide
The beams cause no recoil or heat and are strong enough to rupture steel plates, pulverize rock or punch a hole through a mountain. They flow from his eyes involuntarily and can usually be stopped only by his eyelids or by ruby quartz, the translucent mineral of his visor lens; he has also used sunglasses and contact lenses made of it. Cyclops, Scott Summers, was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and first appeared in The X-Men #1 (1963) as a founding member of the X-Men.
