Background

The game went through around 13,000 testers and its soundtrack included Green Day's "American Idiot" before the song came out as a single. Reviews ranged from mixed to universal acclaim depending on the platform, with the PlayStation 2 and Xbox versions scoring 91 on Metacritic, and critics kept comparing it with ESPN NFL 2K5. That rival launched at $19.99 against Madden's $49.99 and hurt Madden sales enough that EA cut the price to $29.95. In December 2004 EA Sports signed an exclusive deal with the NFL and NFLPA to be the only maker of NFL video games, a deal renewed many times since. Madden NFL 2005 still sold more than 4 million copies in its release year.
