Background
Early Madden Bowls mixed NFL players with musicians and other celebrities; over time it became an invitation-only event for NFL players, who may pick any team. Winners receive a Madden Bowl trophy and recognition in the next Madden game. The 2006 edition, held in Detroit during Super Bowl XL weekend, was shown on ESPN. In 2011 and 2012 it used the Online Team Play feature of Madden NFL 11, with teams of three instead of individuals, before going back to head-to-head games. Reggie Brooks won the first two in 1995 and 1996, and Jacquez Green, Dwight Freeney and Alex Smith each won two years running in the 2000s.
