Background
The headline addition was owner mode, which put the player in charge of a whole franchise: setting hot dog prices, moving the team to a new city and hiring or firing coaches. The game also let players edit historic teams and added a pre-season training camp of mini-camp drills to help players improve faster. It was an EA Sports Bio game, linked with NCAA Football 2004 and NASCAR Thunder 2004. Developer Clint Oldenburg said in 2016 that features were added to later games specifically to stop Vick, and the 2004 Vick returned in the Ultimate Team modes of Madden NFL 25 and 15 as a 99 overall. Backed by an $8.6 million marketing budget, the game sold over 2 million copies in three weeks and more than 5 million within a year; the PlayStation 2 version scored 94 on Metacritic.
