Production
Season 8 of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta went into production in October 2018. That July, Stevie J and Faith Evans had tied the knot in Las Vegas. In October 2018, Tommie was taken into custody for allegedly assaulting her daughter at her high school while extremely drunk. By January 2019, facing a possible 54-year prison sentence, Tommie announced she wouldn't be back for the new season.
Erica Mena also stepped away from her regular role, though she insisted she wasn't fired; she later showed up as a commentator on the special 40 Greatest Love & Hip Hop Moments: The Reboot, which aired during this season. VH1 confirmed the show's return on February 25, 2019, with the premiere set for March 25, 2019. A promo dropped on March 4, 2019, revealing that Spice, Scrapp DeLeon, and Yung Joc were moving up from supporting roles to main cast members.
New supporting players included Shekinah Anderson from T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle, rapper Akbar V, socialite Pooh Hicks, Che Mack, Yung Joc's fiancée Kendra Robinson, and Moniece Slaughter from Love & Hip Hop: Hollywood. Faith Evans made guest appearances, while Bambi's mother Cece and salon owner Sharonda Official had minor supporting parts. On March 12, 2019, Stevie J tweeted that he wasn't returning for a full season, saying "No need." He ended up appearing only occasionally, though he was still listed as a cast member in every episode.
Starting March 6, 2019, VH1 put out a series of cast interviews featuring Rasheeda, Mimi, Karlie, Spice, Stevie J, Kirk, and Tokyo Vanity. A sneak peek of the premiere arrived on March 16, 2019, followed by a five-minute super trailer two days later.
